West Asheville is a destination in itself, not a place you drive through to get somewhere else. Nationally recognized for its attributes, the area west of the French Broad River and River Arts District offers an edgy, multicultural take on living green and entrepreneurialism. Walking neighborhoods with older working class homes in varying stages of revitalization are mixed with inbuilt modern green housing and intentional communities. At one time a haven for house flippers, many new arrivals choose to purchase here based on location and proximity to the diverse, attractive and vibrant Haywood Road corridor of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and kid-friendly establishments. Plus, an unofficial neighborhood network on Facebook knows how to get the word out in times of crisis, share news, and focus on issues. While downtown Asheville is Hippieville, West Asheville is more like Hipsterville.
