It used to be Sugar & Spice and everything nice, but Asheville has a twist on that. Sugar & Snow Gelato was launched in 2013, and available in a couple of places, as well as in a push cart that you could find around town, at events, and for catering. But now things are about to change for the better as they are opening up a new cafe in the Bent Creek area on Brevard Rd, not far from the North Carolina Aboretum.
West Asheville has become a whole foodie experience of their own. Now a new restaurant named Jargon is opening soon on Haywood Road with lots of fine food options to eat. Sean Piper and Chef Matthew Miner are the folks that are making all of this happen.
The Asheville Foodie Community recently launched their new video about restaurants and eateries in the area, and focused a big part of the video on West Asheville.
While making our rounds around town the other day, we decided to eat lunch at The Universal Joint in West Asheville. It was getting warm out and we could see several folks already sitting on the patio area. So we wanted to join them, right under the Cherry Blossom tree with a light wind blowing on us.
We ordered the Jade IPA beer from Foothills Brewing, and the Noble Chai Cider. Then to eat, we decided to try the Trout Reuben, which was SOOO GOOD! And we also tried some Tilapia Tacos and they were delish too. If you ever find yourself on the west end of Asheville, The Universal Joint is a tasty stop with lots of craft beer on tap.
Tacos are taking over Asheville North Carolina. It all started out years ago when a few burrito and taco shops opened. Then a couple of food trucks came on the scene with some tasty tacos. After that, several restaurants started offering craft cuisine style tacos as entrees. Then White Duck came and sort of perfected the taco as we knew it. Ever since then, tacos have been a hot commodity in Asheville.
Now a new taco shop has arisen in West Asheville, and on the Sweet Slope of all places, by the name of Taco Billy. At first we thought “no big deal, just another taco shop,” but boy were we wrong! This place is amazing, and please do not take our word for it. I dare you to go here and even try prove us wrong. Impossible. It’s that good. After a few bites, we knew our standard was raised when it came to gourmet tacos. And they serve amazing breakfast tacos ALL DAY! I had the “Mama’s Favorite” and it was the best I have ever had.
We decided to take a few photos before trying them, because they were so pretty; and just in case they were good, we planned on sharing them with you. Well, not sharing in the way of you actually tasting them… you will have to get your own for that. But please allow us to introduce you to the 4 tacos that we met today:
Mama’s Favorite – Sausage, Egg, Spinach, Sweet Potato, and Goat Cheese on a Plantain Tortilla.
Kirb Service – Beef Medallions, Onions and Peppers stewed in an Ancho Chili Sauce, served with Jack Cheese on a Flour Tortilla.
Support Group – Cumin Sweet Potatoes, Pecan and Black Bean Hummus, Roasted Pepitas, Avocado, Spinach, and Coconut Crema on a Plantain Tortilla (Vegan).
Morita – Chili Stewed Pork and Potatoes, Tangy Slaw, Cilantro, and Jalapeno Crema on a Flour Tortilla.
Check out the Taco Billy Website to see the rest of their delicious menu, hours of operation and more info.
Stopped by Favilla’s Pizza in West Asheville the other night and got some deliciousness to go. I have to say, that this pizzeria is about the closest you are going to get to New York “Hole-In-The-Wall” Style Pizza in the Asheville area. The upper photo is their meatballs and sausage dish, and the other is a regular slice, a “Grandmas” piece (our fave), and their so tasty pinwheels. They expanded into a new dining room at their flagship location last year, and now a new expansion announcement is about to happen any day now!
