An Asian Food Feast at Red Ginger Dim Sum in Asheville

Red Ginger DimSum Asheville NC

I thought I knew what Chinese food was my whole life. I mean I grew up in New York City and there was a little Chinese food takeout spot every couple of blocks. It was great because we could grab a pint of Pork Fried Rice, just like we did a Slice of Pizza, and be on our way. But Chinese cuisine, not so much.

Then just a few years ago my whole perspective changed when I realized that all I knew was Americanized Chinese Food. We took a tour of China and visited so many wonderful cities. What amazing history and culture, and on top of that… an array of authentic Chinese food that I have never tasted before. We ate everywhere from little private huts in the woods, to extravagant penthouse restaurants that were second to none. I knew I was about to eat good when I walked into a room with a giant rotating table top and ice sculptures layered with fine seafood. The best wine served along with it as well.

Now that food and a similar experience has come to Asheville North Carolina. Red Ginger Dim Sum has just opened this week downtown, right near Pritchard Park. We did not know what to expect when we entered, but everything was first class. The waitress even warned us that it was their third day, and the place, as well as her, were new to the scene; and to please forgive them if things seem a little less than perfect. She presented the menu to us, had us scratch out four items that they had run out of, and we began to order immediately. After traveling and tasting China, we knew exactly what our mouths were yearning for. So here is what we feasted on:

Asheville and its surrounding mountainous border has much to see and enjoy. But what if you only have $10.00 in your pocket to “enjoy” the sights, sounds, smells, and secret treasures? How would you spend $10.00 during one fun-filled afternoon? That’s the question we posed to local residents on a particularly snowy winter afternoon. Their responses varied, but seemed to fall into two major categories: (1)Eating and Drinking; and (2)Outdoor Fun. Let’s explore some of their responses.

• Leslie: “Visit the Farmers Market and follow with lunch at the Moose Cafe
• Karen: “Walk through downtown, making sure to stop at the drum circle. Follow this experience with a cold, local craft brew.”
• Carol: “Drive to Mt. Mitchell, take a hike, stop by the Folk Art Center, and grab a snack on the way home.”
• Pam: “Complete a walking tour of the downtown Asheville area followed by a taco from White Duck Taco on Broadway.”
• Abby: “Grab lunch or dinner at the Green Sage Cafe.”
• Bonnie: “Visit the North Carolina Arboretum ($5.00 parking) and take along a picnic lunch.”
• Kitty: “Rent a bike and explore local sites.”
• Rachel: “Eat brunch at Sunny Point Cafe and select the ‘build your own omelet’ option, starting at $8.00.”

Based on these responses, it’s safe to assume that Asheville has fantastic restaurants with reasonable lunch or dinner rates, and lots of outdoor activities to fill an entire day. From hiking and biking to brunch and brews, the area attracts visitors because of its diverse menu of enjoyable activities. Additionally, many of the activities detailed by our residents include “free stuff.” It doesn’t cost a dime to hike the parkway, roam through downtown Asheville’s art deco buildings, or enjoy an outdoor drum circle event.

But no list of Asheville activities is complete without a visit to the bookstores, even if you’re just browsing. Trust me, this nerdy, teetotaler blogger could spend days just roaming through Asheville’s bookstores with a cold lemonade in one hand and a European pastry from Old Europe in the other. From Mr. K’s Used Books, Music, and More and the faith focused Lifeway store to Malaprop’s Bookstore & Cafe and Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar, you’ll find enough books, digital texts, and magazines to last you for years.

Football, Wings & More at Wild Wing Cafe Asheville

Wild Wing Cafe Asheville

The other night we wanted to get out for a few, and we wanted to see some football. I guess you can say that we are not sports fans, but knowing that the Carolina Panthers have come this far calls for us to celebrate right along with it. I grew up in a home where we were either rooting for the Giants or the Jets when it came to football, and the New York Yankees or Mets when it came to baseball.

We walked into Wild Wing Cafe in Downtown Asheville and got put on the waiting list. We headed to the bar area to get some food while we waited. A dude by the name of Ramin took care of us, and started the night off perfect with some local craft brews and wings. Then we got seated at a table, and the game had just begun. The Carolina Panthers were making play after play, and we were having a great time. Sam waited on our table and tended greatly to our every need, and there were many. More beer, more wings, shrimp, flatbread pizza, chicken rolls and whatever else we could find. Brooke the hostess was so awesome too. Not only did she check us in, she was extremely prompt and hospitable, even stopping by the table to draw with our daughter for a few minutes.

When the game was almost over, I looked around the room, and my daughter was the only one wearing red, which was the Cardinals colors. We laughed as it is one of her favorite hoodies, but we thought about how many other people most likely thought we were Cardinal fans. Anyway, we were in red, rooting for the Panthers, and we won! Going to Wild Wing Cafe was a win too, great spot, food, and time there. Thank you.

Korean Barbecue in Downtown Asheville

Korean Barbecue in Asheville

When I first heard of Korean Barbecue, I was on a six city tour of China. Coming from Asheville, also known as Barbecue City USA; I simply thought that Korean Barbecue was barbecue pork with some type of Asian bbq sauce on the side. Boy was I wrong. I went to this place, and they had booth seating where they made you take your shoes off, but we sat in the “Americanized” section with normal seating, keeping our shoes on. They started a grill at/on our table, we added a bunch of meat and vegetables, and we ate the night away. What a fun foodie time!

Asheville’s version was not that different, and a great experience as well; eliminating the need to travel to the other end of the world for this. We stopped by the Korean House in downtown Asheville, waited about 20 minutes for a seat, and then had a delicious meal worth blogging about. Their meats come from local farms in our community which made me enjoy the food even more. Their interior decor could use a lot of help, but they are a fairly new place so hoping they get around to that by Spring.

Dinner at the Noodle Shop in Downtown Asheville

Noodle Shop Asheville

The Noodle Shop in downtown Asheville is one of those few places in the area that serves real Chinese cuisine. And believe me, we have been to them all at one time or another. The restaurant is small, tight and cozy; reminding me of the little hole-in-the-wall Chinese food takeout spots in New York City that I used to frequent. But this one is packed out with tables.

We started with some organic Sake and an order of Shaomai, and then jumped into a couple of entrees… a sizzling plate that consisted of hard noodles on the bottom and chicken, shrimp, scallops and vegetables on top. The other dish was a bowl of wonton noodle soup. If you are downtown Asheville and looking for authentic Chinese food, this is definitely the place. We love this spot and will be back soon.
