Hopslam or Hypeslam?

Hopslam label

It’s the time of year when Bell’s Brewery releases its annual Hopslam double IPA. In local retail stores the beer typically sells out in hours. It’s an eagerly anticipated release, but this year the beginnings of a backlash have surfaced. One local brewer voiced that “several local breweries make better DIPA’s than Hopslam.” Others claim the beer is simply overrated. Whatever your opinion, the beer won’t be around long. What do you think of Hopslam? Are there Asheville beers that top it? Let us know your thoughts.

Winter Warmer a hit

Beer lovers gathered at the US Cellular Center yesterday afternoon for the annual Winter Warmer Festival. Out of town guest Cigar City Brewing Company of Tampa, Florida was a star, pouring several beers not normally available in North Carolina including their Marshal Zhukov Imperial Stout and Warmer Winter seasonal. Local newcomer Wicked Weed also had long lines throughout the afternoon. This year the festival moved upstairs to larger space, allowing the sell-out crowd more room to roam while enjoying fine beers along with catered food from Strada Italiano. Here’s to an even better event in 2014.
