The Day Carl Sandburg Died – the movie

A film production company in Asheville has been working for a number of years on a documentary on the poet Carl Sandburg, The Day Carl Sandburg Died, which will have its Asheville premiere at Wordfest, May 3rd and a repeat showing on May 7th.

We’ve been quite fortunate to have garnered the support and participation of an incredible cast of cultural icons, including the late Studs Terkel, Sandburg’s daughter Helga Sandburg-Crile, Pete Seeger, Norman Corwin, Former Poet Laureate Ted Kooser among many others.

The film tells Sandburg’s story in a modern, cinematic way, weaving archival footage and stunning photography with interviews and performances. While telling Sandburg’s tale, a complex and expansive life, it also tells the story of the America in the 20th century.

Paul Bonesteel, the director, has lived in North Carolina since he was a child and fell in love with Sandburg while wondering around Connemara, Sandburg’s final home, when he was a boy. The film has been a struggle to make, funding for the humanities is hard to come by.

Over 6 years in the making, we’re excited to present to film to its first Asheville audience in May. The film will then be headed for a festival run and events across the country, and eventually be distributed on the PBS networks.I have attached our press release regarding the premiere event and you can visit our website ( for more information.
