Ushas Yoga by Anna Ferguson in Asheville NC

My name is Anna Ferguson, and I am a yoga teacher, writer, mural artist and photographer. I have been living in Asheville for over 5 years now. Ushas Yoga is my business: I do private therapeutic yoga sessions (from 1 to 5 people), teach yoga classes and workshops. I also write articles on yoga, do mural art and photography.

I am the owner and sole employee! I started teaching in Asheville and surrounding areas in 2007. I opened my private studio, Ushas Yoga, in January of 2010. I have been writing, painting and taking photos for 18 years! I love living and working in Asheville for the people, the community. The scenery doesn’t hurt either!

Favorite things about Asheville and WNC: The people, the yoga and the land. There is a special something about these mountains that makes me feel instantly at home. I am inspired by people I meet everyday. Everyone has something to teach me.

The best part of your Asheville or WNC business is: Everything! I love helping people find freedom from pain in the body, mind and spirit with yogic practices. I also love creating murals from baby nurseries to themed pieces. Writing, graphic design and photography are also awesome creative outlets for me.

I work with Asheville Yoga Center on a weekly basis as a teacher and also as a photographer/writer. I also work with West Asheville Yoga, teaching different series and workshops. Lastly, I also network with Lindsay Fields (Hot Yoga) on different social networking sites and events.

What services do you offer?

Private Therapeutic Yoga sessions. Perfect for someone just starting out with yoga or someone who is dealing with illness or injury. Also great for someone not comfortable in class setting or wanting a more personalized experience.

Mural Art. Murals done on any surface with any theme. Designed and completed with creativity to the max!

Photography. Specializing in yoga photography. If you need some head shots, or artistic shots of poses for flyers or your web site, I’m your girl.

Writing. Insightful, creative and complete articles on a host of wellness issues.

Oh, I love making people laugh!

Asheville Yoga: What’s the Buzz?

BIKRAM YOGA ASHEVILLE
Adi Westerman and Janet Horn are bringing the health benefits of yoga to the hot sweaty masses in Asheville.

They Don’t Mess Around

It’s hot. No really, really, seriously hot. I am wearing as little clothing as possible in a public place, standing about 3 feet away from another scantily clad individual with a nervous look on his face. We’re sweaty, we’re thirsty and we are secretly planning our escape. And this is yoga?

Not Your Mama’s Yoga Class
Bikram Yoga, also known as Hot Yoga, has developed quite a buzz in the global yoga community these days. Now folks here in Asheville are experiencing it for themselves. This particular branch of Hatha Yoga, or the physical form of yoga, founded by its namesake Bikram Choudhury, is performed in a room heated to around 105 degrees. A highly disciplined practice, students practice the same 26 yoga poses, 2 breathing exercises and 2 sets of each in every class.

By now you have most likely heard about the health benefits of yoga practice but perhaps not so sure about the intimidating 105 degrees? Bikram Yoga Asheville owner, Janet Horn says, “Just try it. While it’s not for everyone, the heat has many benefits.” The sky high temperatures of a Bikram Yoga class not only helps to acclimate your body to heat (helpful when coping with hot flashes) and allows you to move safely and deeper into the body (great when dealing with injury) it also can be quite empowering and add quality to your life, increased self esteem leading to healthier lifestyle and eating habits according to Janet. Other reported benefits include relief from symptoms of asthma, chronic pain, high blood pressure and rosacea of the skin.

What’s Resolution Got To Do With It?
February 1st, the folks at Bikram Yoga Asheville kicked off their 60 Day Challenge where practitioners will complete 60 yoga classes in 60 days. Whew!

Want to know more? Check out this article recently featured in O, The Oprah Magazine about one woman’s 60 Day Total Life Makeover which included a Bikram 60 Day Challenge. And here is a follow up article.

Asheville: MASH PIT needs all available medical volunteers by 12/8/09

Asheville: We need to know by December 8th how many people are interested in order to plan our logistics and such.

Every year for the past 20 years in December, Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule (as well as The Allman Brothers Band and The Grateful Dead) comes back to his beloved hometown of Asheville, NC to jam with several of his closest friends in the music business. This highly anticipated event, called Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam, occurs at the Asheville Civic Center. These hand chosen performers donate their time and talent to a cause very dear to Warren, Habitat for Humanity. He donates all proceeds to Habitat for Humanity. Past performers have included such giants in the music business as The Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper, Edwin McCain, The Allman Brothers Band, Blues Traveler, Jackson Browne, Peter Frampton and many others too numerous to list. This year the festivities will be headlined by the Counting Crows and Ani DiFranco. Along with the other performers (the list can be found at http://www.xmasjam.com/ and more performers are being added), this year’s Jam should not be missed.

Featured for the first time this year is a group a little different from the musical performers, but just as important. They are MASH PIT. This non-profit organization is a mobile medical group who provides non-judgmental emergency medical treatment to fans, crew and artists in need. Comprised of 6 of the medical industry’s leading emergency care providers, they survive on the kindness of local volunteers (EMTs, RNs, Paramedics, MDs) who wish to help others while enjoying a memorable musical experience. Their love of music combined with their determination to help those in need, create a healing and educational environment for those who find themselves in need of acute care. MASH PIT recognizes that injury and illness happen, even amongst fans seeking to enjoy a musical event. They strive to evaluate and treat you on-site in the hopes of getting you back to your family and friends to enjoy the rest of the event. If a fan is too sick or injured, they coordinate with the local EMS resources and get them to the hospital for a higher level of care. Either way, they are watching and roving and making sure that all are safe and having fun. Some call the MASH PIT team ambassadors of good will and compared them to the Peace Patrol at Woodstock.

Calling all volunteers! Be a part of the team. MASH PIT is shouting out to all available medical people who would be interested in volunteering. Check out their website at www.mash-pit.org/volunteers and sign up using the on-line form. You may also contact the office at 202-596-8918 and provide your information to one of our MASH PIT staff members. This year’s Christmas Jam occurs on December 12, 2009. Orientation will be held on Friday, December 11th at the Convention Center. Deadline for registration is December 8th. With your service comes a limited edition t-shirt, an identifying lanyard, other great perks and the opportunity to enjoy a show while helping others in need. What more could you ask for?
