A Free Ride To Oskar Blues

There is no denying it, by anyone, that Asheville is most definitely a beer town. Until I moved here, I really didn’t know that great beer existed. I drank beer, mostly for its effects, and mostly the kind of beer that is not socially accepted here in beer city (shhh, don’t tell). But luckily I have a new appreciation for craft beer. I have developed a palate for hops, and sometimes it is more of a challenge to find a beer that doesn’t have such a strong effect if you know what I mean.

So I was completely on board when my friend decided that for his birthday celebration we would be taking the Oskar Blues trolley from Asheville to Brevard. This was a relief as the alcohol content in Oskar Blues beer will get you where you want to go, and nowhere good if you are driving.

They picked up our group in West Asheville, behind the Pub. We boarded, the tolerant driver allowed us to play our music loud and proud, and after a quick stop downtown to pick up more beer adventurists we hit the highway, birthday hats and tiara’s blowing in the wind.

After a pretty long trek, but beautiful ride, we arrived at our destination, followed the line of kegs and ceiling high rows of cans to the tasting room and commenced to sipping. There is no reason to drink these heavy beers too fast. For hours we sampled beer, listened to the live band, tried out the food truck, and played corn hole, all around good ol’ birthday fun.

When the trolley pulled up to take us home I remember thinking that the timing was impeccable. It was the perfect amount of time to hang out without overstaying our welcome. After a fairly rowdy trolley ride home, full of yelling, singing, and overall libation merriment, we made it back home just as the rain started to fall.

It was a 30th birthday celebration to be remembered, well mostly remembered, and most importantly it was a free ride (that’s right, FREE) to just one of the beautiful places in WNC, and just one of the great breweries that decided to move here. Thank you Oskar Blues for offering to chauffer our crazy group, we will see you again soon. Don’t worry, not too soon.

Asheville Chocolate and Beer!

French Broad Chocolates at Catawba Beer

So while browsing Twitter the other day, Maria Aponte tweeted that Catawba Beer was going to have a Brew & Chocolate tasting the next day. I was immediately interested. I love beer, chocolate not so much. But I went, and I listened and learned about the percentages of cocoa and other ingredients that are used to create this piece of chocolate. Educational, plus we got to drink beer, and pair them with these delicious chocolates on deck.

Beer + Tequila = An Asheville Beerita!

Asheville Beerita Fig Bistro Biltmore Village biltmore village

Beer is getting old in Asheville (well not really) but spicing it up with Tequila sounded like a plan to us. We started this mission at Fig Bistro, and have since tried and tested many other places. The type of beer we used? I liked it with a Catawba Firewater, a shot of Tequila, a splash of fresh lemon and lime, salt, and a lime riding the rim of my glass. Perfectomundo! So good.

Asheville Beeritas Cantina Biltmore Village

At the Cantina at Biltmore Village, we tried it with Negro Modelo, and a White Zombie Ale. Delish. So now, since they have like 50 types of tequila at the bar, we have a lot of beer/tequila pairing and testing to do. Try it, you may like it! This may be a new movement in the works. The Asheville Beerita Culture lol.

Beer just ain’t what it used to be in Asheville North Carolina. It just keeps getting better and better. And recently, Catawba Valley Brewing Company opened up a second NC location in Biltmore Village. This place is great. They have so many great brews on tap, the staff is great, and the temporary location is the perfect spot to roll out the red carpet for their permanent location across the street, right behind Fig Bistro.

We have already have a bunch of great times at the new Catawba Valley Brewery! We walked in one night and Circus Mutt was on stage and the place was packed out.. running into the parking lot. Locals, tourists and friends all over the place. The spot is located about 1/2 mile straight outside the gates of the Biltmore Estate, right past several eateries and lots of shopping.
