While downtown Asheville in a meeting, I looked at my Twitter feed and found out that there was a rally for Trayvon Martin just a block away. I quickly finished and raced up there to talk to a few of the people and get some media footage. WLOS was on the scene as well doing interviews. Here is a quick video I took:
The Asheville community is invited to attend: JOIN MSA AND BSA IN A HOODIES AND HIJAB RALLY ON THURSDAY, MARCH 29 AT 12:30 PM ON THE QUAD at UNC-Asheville
PLEASE WEAR BOTH A BLACK HOODIE AND A BLACK SCARF TO STAND WITH THESE FALLEN VICTIMS.
WE ARE ASKING ALL UNC-A STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS EVENT ALL DAY. BLACK HOODIES AND SCARVES SHOULD SURROUND OUR CAMPUS.
Recently, Trayvon Martin and Shaima Alawadi have uncovered this by suffering tragic results.
Trayvon Martin, a young black 17-year old male in Florida was wearing a hood walking out of an all white neighbourhood when he was shot by George Zimmerman in cold blood. His choice of weapon: Skittles and a can of ice-tea
Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year old Iraqi mother of 5 in California was brutally beaten inside of her home with a iron tire, alongside her unconscious body read a note from the perpetrator that said, “go back to your own country”
These are just two cases out of thousands, we are a part of the generation that needs to make a difference.
If you would like, you can RSVP to the event on Facebook.
